Sunlight On A Saturday Night

Soon after my wife and I got married, we moved from Pennsylvania to Central FL. We had a 1981 Volkswagen that I bought off my Mom. We'd pack that car to the gills and make trips as often as we could, trying to transport everything we owned to our new apartment.

We were on the way south with a full load. Just as we were getting into North Carolina, the back end started really swaying. Mind you, we had about $90.00 left on our credit card and absolutely no mechanical skill. It turns out that the wheel bearings froze up, locking up one of the back tires. We limped off the highway and into Tim & Pat Couch's Chevron station in Elkin North Carolina. We asked them if there was any way they could help us out.

They said they would do their best but it would have to wait till morning. We asked them if they would mind if we slept in our car in their parking lot. They agreed but asked us to try to move the car to their old lot. We did.

It was around 6:00 in the evening as we began to settle in. We decided to go for a little walk through the town of Elkin. Everything was closed. The streets were bare and Kandy and I looked at each other when I said, "It feels like we're in the middle of nowhere."

Since we really didn't have much else to do, I mentioned that I should try to write a song about Elkin NC. I figured that since I grew up in a small town similar to Elkin, I could pull my inspiration from what I lived through. Little did we know that little Elkin NC would inspire "Sunlight On A Saturday Night."

A true story about my wife and I from the day we met to the day we got married. I wrote the song as we walked the streets that night. As we approached our car, we noticed some people gathered around it with flashlights. We ran up to the car to discover Tim and Pat standing their. It turns out that they got together with their church and got us a room at the Holiday Inn, free repair on our car, lunch, and gas money for the trip home.

Once I start making some money, I plan to stop in every now and then and return the favor. If you ever find yourself passing through Elkin, maybe you can stop in the Chevron station and do the same. Because who knows, if it hadn't been for their kindness, I might have not have ever written "Sunlight On A Saturday Night".
